HP Photosmart R717 Review

The HP Photosmart R717 continues a recent trend in the digital camera industry of taking an existing successful design, upgrading the megapixel count and releasing it as a brand new model. There really is very little difference between the R717 and its award-winning predecessor, the R707. The main change is the upgrade from 5 to 6 megapixels. While this allows for marginally bigger prints, it does result in slightly noisier images at ISO 200 and faster, plus there's slightly more evidence of chromatic aberrations in the form of purple fringing in high-contrast areas.

| f you're a beginner to photography, the 6.2-megapixel HP Photosmart R717's unique help features will help you expand your comfort zone. And when you're ready, a smattering of manual controls will let you expand your creative horizons.
The R717 feels well-constructed, with a stainless-steel front, subtly sculpted for a comfortable grip. The 1.8-inch LCD is bright and clear, and menus are very easy to read and navigate. Like many of the new HP cameras, the R717 includes a system designed to help beginners along. Help messages explain settings and a Help menu provides tips and other useful information (such as guides to camera buttons and shortcuts). An Image Advice feature analyzes your images after you take them and offers suggestions for improvement, such as which mode to use, or when to use exposure compensation or the flash. |

| High tech but easy to use, the HP R717 is capable of turning in some top-quality shots under ideal circumstances, and copes better than most with unusual lighting. Its relatively low price should make it a competitive choice in the high-end compact market. |

| It has a well-conceived design, a few interesting features, and decent image quality, but the one thing that the 6.2-megapixel HP Photosmart R717 has in spades is a crippling case of sloth. We're talking performance that makes you feel like you're operating in bullet-time, like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, without the benefits of superhuman reflexes or the ability to fly. But despite some redeeming qualities-a menu and control layout that are easy for even novices to master, an effective panorama mode, and a very good macro setting that yields sharp results-the R717's subpar performance makes us hestitant to recommend it unreservedly. |

| The HP Photosmart R717 is a serious attempt by a long-time computer manufacturer to make all aspects of digital photography enjoyable. This 6 MP compact camera goes beyond traditional digital photography and basic image editing and integrates itself with a host of online web services, in-camera help functionality, and external printers to bring the full spectrum of digital photography to life. Thoughtful design went into this camera and it shows. Novices will be thrilled with the built-in help functionality, automatic red eye removal, and a host of other features. |

| The HP Photosmart R717 is a compact 6MP digital camera with a 3x Optical zoom lens (8.0 - 24.0mm equivelant to 39mm - 117mm on a 35mm camera), and a 1.8" Colour TFT screen. The R717 is an update to the 5 megapixel, 1.5" screen R707 which I reviewed last year. The camera comes with 32mb of memory built into the camera, and can be upgraded with SD cards. The camera takes rechargable Lithium-Ion batteries. The camera also records 320x240 videos at 30fps with sound. The camera has a number of scene modes / built in help to make it easier to use, as well as this HP's 'Real Life Technologies' such as 'HP Adaptive Lighting Technology', and automatic red-eye removal. |
